Walking in Gratitude
There’s something magical about our pre-dawn walks through our neighborhood. Not our neighborhood, but the beautiful streets that border our little corner of the world.
Walking through the tree-lined street feels like strolling through a private park, and every single time, I’m filled with gratitude for this gift that sits right next to where we live.
The Black Cat’s Message
It was on one of these quiet morning walks that the universe taught me something I’d been forgetting.
Out of nowhere, a sleek black cat emerged from the bushes and made a beeline straight for me. Not the casual saunter most cats do, but a determined runway-model strut—one elegant paw in front of the other, moving with absolute purpose. This cat had decided I was the one she needed to see.
She wound around my legs in the way only cats can do, purring and meowing, letting me pet her while she claimed me as hers for those few moments. When we finally continued our walk, I turned back to see her lying in the middle of the road, watching us disappear into the morning mist.
At first, I made up a story about it. My sister, who passed away, never met an animal she didn’t stop to greet and befriend. Maybe this was her way of saying hello. It’s the kind of romantic notion we create when something touches us unexpectedly.
But the universe had not finished with me yet.
The Young Dreamer Appears
A few days later, standing in our little backyard woods—the space that Del has been developing with walking trails and trees—we noticed a young man working in the yard next door.
He looked up, saw us, and just like that black cat, walked straight toward us with intention and purpose.
What followed was one of those conversations that felt like pure gift. He shared his dreams and aspirations, the vision he had for his life’s work. And he listened—really listened—as we offered every idea we could think of to help him succeed. Two strangers in the woods, connected by something larger than coincidence.
That’s when it hit me. The black cat. The young man. Both drawn directly to us, both moving with that same focused determination.
I’d been so busy trying to make things happen. Following all the marketing advice, pushing and promoting, chasing opportunities and trying to force doors open.
The Truth I’d Been Forgetting
I’d forgotten the fundamental truth I’ve always known and shared with others: the universe moves toward you. You just have to position yourself where it can find you.
We weren’t hunting for that cat—we were walking in a place we loved, filled with gratitude for its beauty. We weren’t networking in the backyard—we were tending to a space that brings us joy.
In both cases, we were simply being where we wanted to be, not where we thought we had to be for something to happen.
The black cat found us again. More than once. One morning, we were a quarter mile from that first encounter when I saw her streak across a yard and run straight down the street toward me, delighted and determined, as if she’d been searching.
Watching something want to reach you that badly, move toward you with such clear focus—it’s humbling and amazing.
It made me ask: what if marketing isn’t about chasing?
What if it’s about positioning? What if it’s less “go out and get them” and more “here I am, do you want what I have?”
But here’s the key—you have to be somewhere you actually want to be.
Not where someone told you the opportunities are. Not where the “experts” say you should network.
Be in your version of that beautiful neighborhood, filled with genuine gratitude for where you are, doing what you love in a way that you love doing it.
When you’re in that space—open, grateful, authentically yourself—that’s when the black cats and dreamers find their way to you.
That’s when the universe can move in your direction.
So ask yourself: Are you positioning yourself where you want to be?
Are you marketing from a place of love, from a space that fills you with gratitude? Or are you chasing, pushing, trying to make magic happen in places that drain your soul?
What the Black Cat Knows
The black cat knows the difference. And so do the people meant to find you.
Be where you love to be. Be open. Be ready.
The universe will bring them to you.
It’s not how much or how many, but the connection and shift it brings that makes the difference.
PS: I managed to catch this video a few days ago. Here she is. Pretend that it’s the universe walking toward you.
